Little Red School Desk Makeover
Lots going on and I’m dying to share everything with you, but today I am sharing a couple of cute little desks that I painted a couple of weeks ago! Love the way this school desk makeover worked out!
My sweet sweet friend Margie was downsizing and moving and sold me 2 of these lovely wood desks. They belonged to her her 2 beautiful daughters, both who are all grown up now and I hope they are ok with me changing up their little school desks! I neglected to get a picture of the 2 of them “before”
(I’m learning, what can I say?)
I cleaned the pieces with a mild degreaser, then used a gum remover to get rid of…well…gum…there were also a lot of stickers on these babies at one time (thank you very much Leslie and Sarah ha ha) so I had to get rid of all the residue as well. A good gum remover, followed by a degreaser and a good rinse worked well, I then gave them a little light sanding and started to paint!
I decided to spray paint the little desks – I know – I know – I’m a lover of milk paints and chalk paints, but I wanted to try out my snazzy new spray paint nozzles from Rustoleum that I received at Haven, and it rocked. I’m on a mission to try all of the products that were donated and that I
lugged home brought home. I don’t think I will be spraying a lot of pieces, but for this piece I thought I would try it.
I used Cherry Red. I LOVE the colour!
I gave the body of the desks 2 light coats, I wanted to see the wood grain through the red and it came out perfect if I do say so myself!
I painted the arms with Rustoleums Chalk Board paint that I brought home from Haven as well, I just rolled it on the arms. Easy peasy.
I did 3 coats of the chalkboard paint, letting it dry well between coats! I did “prepare” the chalkboard by using a piece of chalk on its side and covering the entire area then wiping off. This seasons your chalkboard and is a super important step if you are using chalkboard paint! Now the kids can write right on the desk itself – way fun right?
I was going to spray the body with a poly to protect, but the finish seems super hard, and they have turned out so nicely I think I’ll leave them as they are! I hope Margie’s little girls approve!
Here they are together, my little red painted desks, all painted up and ready to find new homes.
Thanks for popping in, have a great weekend!

Hey Wendy, These look fantastic! What a great idea to use the chalkboard paint perfect for doodlers like myself….well when I was a little girl and could fit in one of those desks! HAHA well done! love your news and sorry to hear you were hacked!
Thanks Nancy, all part of the learning curve I guess and thank you for the comments on the desks you are so sweet, they were so fun to do! :)
Ahhhhhhh Wendy…love the story and LOVE the desks!! They are beautiful! Almost(haha) wish I had grand kids to buy them back!
Thanks Margi, I hoped you’d ok with me painting them up, who knows, maybe the girls will want them back someday ha ha
So sorry to hear you were hacked! Not fun, but I’m glad you were able to get that straightened away?… The old desks look fabulous! I really love the zesty pop of colour and adding chalkboard paint to the table is genius! They would be a great addition to any kid’s room. Thanks for the inspiration! :0)
So cute! This reminds me of a $5.00 thrift store desk that I did for my kids a while ago. I added some ABC stickers to the top and made it into a chalkboard! Here’s the link if you want to check it out!
Thanks for sharing!
Hi Serena, Thanks so much for the comments! Love the one you did too! So sweet, thanks for stopping in and for the Facebook sharing, such a great idea!
I love the desks! I’ve been wanting to try that nozzle, too! I’m glad to hear it worked well! I also love the idea of putting the chalkboard surface on the arm/table part of the desks. How creative! :)
Hi Brooke, Thanks! I have to say I LOVED that nozzle (so much so I forgot to get a picture of it) ha ha, I have used similar before but that one was just the best ever, even hubs tried it out and loved it!!
What cute desks!! I love the red with the chalkboard writing surfaces :)
Thank you Katie!
