Discovering beauty in unexpected places is one of the joys of exploring Newfoundland.

Yesterday, while driving to Gros Morne, we were treated to this picturesque little lake (or as we say in Newfoundland, a pond) nestled alongside the highway. Pulling the RV over in hopes of capturing a worthy picture always requires a deliberate effort. But every time I do, I chuckle because I’m reminded of the countless missed opportunities in the past when I would pass by such captivating scenes without taking the time to stop, only to regret it later.

Look for the beauty

It takes me back to the wisdom shared by photography master Freeman Patterson in one of his books. He emphasized the importance of seizing every chance, as life is filled with countless missed opportunities.

Inspired by his words, I now always make a conscious effort to make the stop. Since then, my travels have become more rewarding, even though it now takes me twice as long to reach my destinations! This particular stop was no exception—it rewarded me with a photograph that was truly typical of Newfoundland’s highways.

A quick stop on the road can be so rewarding.”
